Your Journey, Day by Day

  1. 1Day 1 of 2

    Kampala to Lake Mburo

Drive west across the Equator and through Ankole longhorn-cattle country, about four hours. After lunch, an afternoon game drive or a guided walking safari with an armed ranger. Mburo is one of the very few parks in Uganda where you can explore on foot, and the reason is simple: there are no elephants here and lions are scarce. What there is instead is what you cannot easily see elsewhere. This is the only Ugandan park holding impala, the country’s best place for eland, and since fifteen Rothschild’s giraffe were moved down from Murchison in 2015 they have bred well and are now a fixture on the acacia flats. Zebra and topi are everywhere.

    Boat Cruise & Return

A morning boat cruise on Lake Mburo for hippo, crocodile and African fish eagle, working the overhanging vegetation along the shore for the elusive African finfoot and the malachite kingfishers that hunt from it. Birders should ask the guide for the red-faced barbet, an acacia specialist with almost no other reliable site in the country. Alternatively, a horseback safari arranged through the lodge gets you out among the zebra without an engine. Then the drive back to Kampala.
