Kampala to Bwindi (Rushaga)
Early departure for the long but genuinely scenic drive south-west, 8-9 hours through Mbarara and the Ankole longhorn-cattle country, crossing the Equator at Kayabwe for the photograph and a coffee at the craft stalls. Past Ntungamo the road climbs into the Kigezi highlands, where hillsides terraced to the ridgeline have earned the region its "Switzerland of Africa" nickname. Lunch en route. You arrive at Rushaga in the late afternoon, one of Bwindi’s four trekking sectors, and the one with the most habituated families, which is why it carries the widest permit availability and the park’s only habituation permits. The evening is yours for an early dinner and the pre-trek briefing.

Gorilla Trekking, Rushaga Sector
After early coffee, report to the trailhead for the ranger briefing: eight trekkers at most per gorilla family, a seven-metre distance rule, and the chance to hire a porter, worth taking both for the steep ground and for the income it puts into the villages on the forest edge. Then you walk in. Bwindi earns its name; trackers cut a line through nettles, vines and near-vertical mud, and the trek runs anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours depending on where the family fed the night before. Your permitted hour begins the moment they are found. You come out with a tracking certificate, and the afternoon is free for the optional Batwa Forest Experience or a village walk through the tea and banana smallholdings below the park. Bwindi to Entebbe
A relaxed breakfast with the forest below you before the drive back north through Kabale and Mbarara. Lunch breaks the journey, and there is time at the Kayabwe Equator for the drum and basket stalls and the water-swirling demonstration. You arrive in Kampala or Entebbe in the late afternoon, in good time for evening international departures.
